STARTUP Franklin
Southampton

STARTUP Franklin Southampton is a business competition and development program that provides financial assistance and business training for people interested in starting a for-profit business within the City of Franklin or Southampton County limits.

Beginning in 2017, FSEDI partnered with the Downtown Franklin Association (DFA) in STARTUP Downtown Franklin, when DFA was awarded a grant from DHCD for the Community Business Launch Program. FSEDI then became the primary funding sponsor and manager for STARTUP, expanding to include commercial areas of Southampton County as a Franklin Southampton program. STARTUP has funded 12 businesses in Franklin Southampton (all still running today), received the 2020 Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), and the Virginia Economic Developers Association’s (VEDA) 2022 Community Economic Development Award. Six non-winners also opened their business after participating!

STARTUP Franklin Southampton provides so many wonderful benefits to our community. It gives a focal point for commercial and retail development and encourages entrepreneurship, creating an annual community event for local entrepreneurs and FSEDI. STARTUP encourages local retail and service diversity, making our communities better places to live, work, and play. STARTUP is a low-cost way to encourage business development and creates community involvement in economic development. The pitch competition awards prize money and our administration also requires funds for instruction. The total package creates businesses at a much lower cost than other types of economic development programs.
